Tips for applying as cabin crew

Within the group, cabin crew recruitment is carried out airline by airline, through vacancies published on the group's careers portal, and requirements differ from one airline to another. The 2026 vacancies for Lufthansa City Airlines (Munich, Frankfurt) and Austrian Airlines (Vienna) both require German and English, from B2 level for the former and with C1 level German for the latter. The City Airlines "with experience" vacancy requires a valid CCA and 12 months' flying experience, whereas the "without experience" vacancy does not mention the CCA among its requirements.

Fleet figures as of end of 2025 — indicative (public sources, they change over time); check with the airline before an interview.

History

The first Luft Hansa was founded in Berlin on 6 January 1926 through the merger of Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutsche Aero Lloyd, and made its first flight on 6 April of the same year. This company disappeared after the Second World War; a second Lufthansa was reconstituted in 1953 in Cologne, took back the name Lufthansa in 1954 and resumed flight operations in 1955. The group co-founded Star Alliance in 1997, bought SWISS in 2005 and Austrian Airlines in 2009, gradually took control of Brussels Airlines from 2009 onwards, and acquired 41% of ITA Airways in 2023. In 2020, the health crisis led to a €9 billion support package that gave the German state 20% of the capital. Lufthansa City Airlines, based in Munich and later also in Frankfurt, is presented by the group as its youngest airline.

Frequently asked questions

How do you apply to be cabin crew within the Lufthansa Group?+

Applications can only be made in response to a vacancy published on the group's careers portal: speculative applications are not accepted. A candidate area allows applicants to track their application, and an email alert notifies them when new vacancies are published. After a rejection or withdrawal, you must wait one year before reapplying for the same position.

What are the age, education and language requirements?+

The group's FAQ sets the minimum age at 18, with no other limit up to the legal retirement age. The Lufthansa City Airlines vacancy requires completed schooling or vocational training (with two years' work experience in the case of a Hauptschulabschluss), very good knowledge of German and English (B2 level minimum) and the ability to swim. The Austrian Airlines vacancy requires the Matura, an apprenticeship or comparable training, German at C1 level and English at B2 level.

Do you already need to hold the CCA to apply?+

This depends on the vacancy. At Lufthansa City Airlines, the "with experience" vacancy requires a valid CCA and at least 12 months' flying experience, while the "without experience" vacancy does not list the CCA among its requirements. The vacancies reviewed do not detail the content of the initial training specific to each airline.

How long does training last and in which language do you work?+

The group's FAQ indicates training lasting around 12 to 14 weeks, covering emergency procedures, first aid, airline- and service-specific knowledge, as well as familiarisation flights. For positions in Germany, the probationary period is generally six months. The working language is German and/or English depending on the position, and the group offers neither a work-shadowing placement nor a discovery flight for the cabin crew role.

What pay do the group's airlines publish?+

In its 2026 vacancy, Lufthansa City Airlines states a starting gross salary of up to €2,542 per month full-time, including non-taxable flight pay (65 block hours). Austrian Airlines mentions a collectively agreed starting salary of €37,736.72 gross per year for full-time work after training, excluding travel allowances, overtime and sales commissions. These amounts are those stated in the vacancies cited and depend on the airline and working hours.
