History

SAS was formed in 1946 from the Danish airline DDL, the Norwegian DNL and the Swedish SILA, and operated its first intercontinental flight between Stockholm and New York. The consortium took its current form in 1951; in 1954 the airline inaugurated the first scheduled polar route between Copenhagen and Los Angeles, followed by a round-the-world service via the North Pole in 1957. It entered the jet age with the Caravelle in 1959 and put its first Boeing 747 into service in 1971. SAS is one of the founding members of Star Alliance in 1997 and in 2018 ordered fifty Airbus A320neo aircraft to build a uniform fleet. Placed under US Chapter 11 protection in July 2022, it completed its restructuring during the 2024 financial year, joined SkyTeam in September 2024, and in July 2025 Air France-KLM announced its intention to become the majority shareholder, with closing targeted for the second half of 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements to become cabin crew at SAS?+

The advert requires candidates to be at least 18 years old (20 for the Norway base), to be between 160 and 190 cm tall without shoes, to speak and write fluent English, to be a strong swimmer, to have completed secondary education and to have two years' experience in a customer-facing role. Candidates must also hold a valid European Union passport, accept irregular working hours (including weekends and public holidays) and comply with the company's grooming and uniform standards.

How does the recruitment process work?+

There are six stages in sequence: application with online assessment, video presentation, assessment centre, security checks, medical examination and tests, and then cabin crew training. All stages must be passed before training begins. SAS runs this recruitment process with its provider AAP Aviation, through portals dedicated to each base, depending on its operational needs.

In which cities does SAS recruit cabin crew?+

The advert lists Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen. Application links are provided for Copenhagen (male and female cabin crew and stewards), Stockholm and Oslo, but not for Bergen. Candidates must meet the residence and commuting requirements of their chosen base.

Candidates undergo a security interview, a five-year background check, reference checks and must present a clean criminal record.
